Jackson and Rush lead Bears over Niles
St. Joseph wins fourth straight over Vikings

(St. Joseph) – After two long road trips at Marshall and Harper Creek to begin the 2009 season. The St. Joseph Bears got a taste of home cooking as the Bears blew out the Niles Vikings 48-0 in the Big 16 West Division opener for both teams.

St. Joseph and Niles went three and out on their first drives but the Bears second drive ended with success as the Bears marched 46 yards in 5 plays to take a 7-0 lead when Bobby Symonds caught his first TD pass of the season from Jeremy Rush.

After another Niles punt. St. Joe found the end zone on the next drive as the Bears went 56 yards in 4 plays capped off by a 21 yard run from Jamaal Jackson and a 14-0 St. Joe lead.

The 2nd quarter was even worse for Niles. The Vikings would drive down to the Bears 37 yard line only to turn the ball over on downs. The Bears needed two plays to add to the Vikings misery. Jamaal Jackson broke loose on for a 62 yard run down to the Niles 1 yard line. After an illegal procedure penalty backed it up to the 6. Jackson finished what he started as he scored his second TD of the game. The Bears held a 21-0 lead

Niles would be forced to punt again after a 3 and out St. Joe would again get the ball back and find the endzone 6 plays later on a 7 yard touchdown run to give the Bears a 27-0 lead.

St. Joe took advantage of a huge mistake by the Vikings when returner Aaron Davis fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by St. Joe at the Niles 21 yard line. Four plays later Jeremy Rush had his second straight touchdown run and the Bears held a 34-0 lead going into halftime.

St. Joe would start the running clock late in the third quarter as Jamaal Jackson went on a 56 yard sprint to the endzone and St. Joe increased the lead to 41-0.

As the fourth quarter continued, St. Joe coach Elliot Uzelac started clearing the benches and Senior QB Sean Guinane saw his first action of the season, Guinane missed the first two games of the season because of illness. Guinane threw two passes and completed one in his short time,

Late in the fourth quarter, the Bears would finish off the scoring with Tommy Fry seeing action at quarterback. Fry handed off to Ty Taylor for a 5 yard touchdown.

It’s the Bears 4th straight win over the Vikings. During the Bears win streak vs. the Vikings, St. Joseph has outscored Niles 131-9.

Lakeshore quarterback Eric Lemon threw for 253 yards passing and two touchdown passes as well as running for one himself in Lakeshore’s 43-26 win over Mattawan. Zack Moore and Tyler Brindley had two rushing TD’s each for Mattawan

Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 19, Benton Harbor 14 – Griffith Stadium, Kalamazoo
Demetrius Greer, Zack Rickli, and Craig Russo had rushing touchdowns as the Knights had to hold on to a late game Benton Harbor charge as the Knights won the division opener against the Tigers 19-14

Portage Central 35, Portage Northern 14 – McCamley Field, Portage
Portage Northern had a 21-0 lead entering the fourth quarter thanks to touchdowns by Brian Wise, Nick Price, and EJ Tillman as the Mustangs won the Kavanaugh Trophy for the fourth consecutive season with a 35-14 win over rival Northern.  Spencer Munson added two rushing touchdowns to seal the victory.

Lumen Christi 42, Battle Creek Lakeview 0 – Spartan Memorial Stadium, B.C.
Jackson Lumen Christi scored 21 points in the first and second quarters as the Titans improved to 2-1 on the season with a 42-0 win over Battle Creek Lakeview.  The Spartans were held to just 40 yards of total offense.

Marshall 36, Kalamazoo Central 6 – Thomas Stadium, Kalamazoo
Kyle Waidelich and Garrett Woods each had two touchdowns and Jamar Wimberly added another as the Redhawks improved to 3-0 on the season with a 36-6 win at Kalamazoo Central

Battle Creek Harper Creek 52, Battle Creek Central 20 – Harper Creek Stadium, Battle Creek
Harper Creek scored 30 points in the second quarter after falling behind 14-0 after the first quarter.  Mike McKenzie and Jeff Holm each added two touchdowns in the Beavers first ever win on artificial turf, as Harper Creek defeated Central 52-20.

Coldwater 30, Sturgis 9 – Cardinal Field, Coldwater 
Coldwater pulled away from arch rival Sturgis with three second half touchdowns as the Cardinals won their third straight game over Sturgis with a 30-9 win.  Coldwater retains the Silver Football Trophy.
