(St. Joseph) – The Bears looked well on their way to a victory over
Lakeshore when the Bears and Lancers went to the locker rooms for halftime
of Friday's rivalry game at Dickinson Stadium. Unfortunately for the
Bears the second half was a different story as Lakeshore scored 29
unanswered points as the Lancers won 39-28.
St.
Joe started out strong as the Bears went on a 9 play 55 yard drive capped
off by Jamaal Jackson's three yard touchdown run to give the Bears a 7-0
lead.
Lakeshore drove 63 yards to the Bears 10 yard line but the drive stalled,
Ian Armstrong would kick a 27 yard field goal to cut the Bears lead to 7-3.
St.
Joe would find the endzone again on their next drive as the Bears went 63
yards in 7 plays. Jamaal Jackson would score his second touchdown of
the game from 10 yards out to put the Bears up 14-3.
Lakeshore again would respond with a score on their next drive as Adam
Miller's 5 yard touchdown run concluded a 7 play 53 yard drive for the
Lancers to make the score 14-10 in the second quarter.
Both
teams would trade punts on their next possessions. St. Joe would go on
a 6 play 87 yard drive as Jamaal Jackson scored his third straight score for
a 21-10 St. Joe lead.
It
didn't take the Bears long to find the endzone again after a Lakeshore punt,
as Sean Guinane scored on a 56 yard touchdown run on the first play of the
drive to put the Bears up 28-10 at the half.
However the second half was in the red for St. Joe, as Lakeshore used a 7
minute drive to cut the lead to 28-17 as Eric Lemon threw a 31 yard
touchdown pass to Jordan Kauffman.
Lakeshore would for the Bears to punt and then use another long drive to cut
the lead to 28-25 early in the fourth quarter as Nick Adams scored on a 35
yard run with Adam Miller catching Lemon's two point conversion attempt.
Another St. Joe drive ended with a punt as the Bears would continue to take
costly penalties giving Lakeshore the ball back. Lakeshore took one
play to take the lead as Adam Miller would score a 68 yard run to give
Lakeshore their first lead of the night at 32-28.
Lakeshore would close out the scoring and seal the win at Nick Adams scored
on an 8 yard run with 90 seconds left to provide the final score of 39-28
Lakeshore.
The
loss for St. Joe and the win for Lakeshore now creates a 4-way tie for the
Big 16 West Division title with St. Joe, Lakeshore, Portage Central, and
Portage Northern. Ironically the four teams that lead the division
will face one of the other teams that lead the division. The division
cannot be won outright, two teams will share the division title.
