Bears jump out early to beat Marshall

(St. Joseph) – St. Joe may have started the season with a new coach and a lot of questions about the team this season, but the Bears showed that as much as things change, sometimes they stay the same.

St. Joe defeated Marshall in convincing fashion 44-13 at Dickinson Stadium to open the 2011 season. A year after St. Joe opened the 2010 season with an equally convincing 37-7 win over Marshall.

The Bears got going immediately on the first possession of the game. Junior QB James Morris, making his first career start, led the Bears on an 11 play, 66 yard drive that led to a 2 yard touchdown run by Alex Rutherford, Rutherford ran for 55 yards on the drive.

The Bears defense on their first action of the season kept Marshall pinned back and forced the Redhawks to a 3 an out resulting in a 7 yard loss on the Redhawks first drive and a Marshall punt.

Following the Marshall punt, St. Joe started their next drive on the Marshall 38 yard line and after a 27 yard run by Rutherford, the Bears were set up at the Redhawks 11 yard line. After no gain on first down, Morris threw a perfect toss to Austin Steffen for the touchdown and a 14-0 St. Joe lead.

Another three and out for the Marshall offense, resulting in another 3 yard loss on the drive the Bears got the ball back inside Marshall territory. However this time the Bears weren’t able to gain a first down, but punter Evan Hampton pinned the Redhawks at their own 2 yard line. On the very next play, Chris Ketchmark tackled Marshall’s Tony Wimberly in the endzone for a safety giving the Bears a 16-0 lead.

The Bears would start the second quarter with the ball and after another drive starting on the Marshall side of the field, St. Joe would find the endzone a few plays later, when Rutherford would score on another 2 yard run, and give the Bears a 23-0 lead.

Marshall went three and out on their next drive and the Bears found the endzone as St. Joe used 6 plays, traveling 75 yards in just over 2 minutes as Justin Gambrell rushed it in the endzone from 14 yards out and the Bears had a 30-0 lead.

More Marshall problems set up the Bears next score as a snap over the head of Marshall punter Chase Bennett gave the Bears the ball at the Redhawks 2 yard line. Alex Rutherford scored his third touchdown of the game to give the Bears at 37-0 going to end the first half.

With the mercy rule in effect in the second half, Marshall would get touchdown runs from Tony Wimberly and Isaiah Fountaine to cut the Bears lead to 37-13.

After the Fountaine touchdown, St. Joe’s Jalen Holmes returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for the touchdown and gave the Bears a 44-13 lead.

St. Joe’s Ryan Kitron also playing in his first varsity game was 6 for 6 on PAT’s. Josh Schoeplein made 11.5 tackles, including a sack for 15 yards, 4 tackles for loss totaling 22 yards and an interception.

St. Joe plays their first round game next Friday at Battle Creek Lakeview (0-1) who was defeated at Lakeshore 54-14 on opening night.

Lakeshore 54, Battle Creek Lakeview 14 - Al Stockman Stadium, Stevensville
Brandon Myers and Nick Schultz each had interception returns for scores, and Devon Bailey had 2 touchdown runs in his return to Lakeshore and Lakeshore defeated Battle Creek Lakeview 54-14.  Both of Lakeview's touchdowns were also interception returns for touchdowns.
Benton Harbor 48, Sturgis 42 - OT - Filstrup Field, Benton Harbor
Benton Harbor rallied from a 22 point deficit in the final quarter and stunned Sturgis 48-42 in overtime.  Dayshun Spears ran for a 10 yard touchdown on the Tigers first play in Overtime and the Tiger defense, stopped Sturgis on their drive for the win It was Benton Harbor's first win at home since 8/31/06, when Benton Harbor beat Kalamazoo Central 38-37.
Niles 32, Jackson Lumen Christi 26 - Viking Stadium, Niles
A combination of big plays by Niles and mistakes by Lumen Christi all led to the Vikings to a 32-26 win over Lumen Christi.  Ronnie Jones scored two touchdowns, and ran for 133 yards.  Quinton Irby returned a fumble 87 yards in the win.
Mattawan 27, Coldwater 13 - Wildcat Stadium, Mattawan
After Coldwater scored on their first series, Mattawan scored the next 27 points as the Wildcats beat Coldwater 27-13.  Brok Lamorandier rushed for 123 yards for Mattawan.  Mattawan had 341 yards total, all on the ground, Coldwater finished with a game total of 230.
Portage Northern 34, Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 7 - Griffith Stadium, Kalamazoo
Troy Bitterle threw for three touchdowns, Tyler Holland had a rushing score and Nolan Thomas returned a fumble for a touchdown as Portage Northern beat Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 34-7.   Kane Cruz had a TD pass for Loy Norrix.
Battle Creek Harper Creek 24, Portage Central 0 - McCamley Field, Portage
Portage Central turned the ball over six times, Kasey Carson ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns as Battle Creek Harper Creek defeated Portage Central 24-0 at McCamley Field.  Braden Black also added a rushing touchdown for the Beavers.
Kalamazoo Central 28, Battle Creek Central 22 - C.W. Post Field
Brandon Delk ran for two touchdowns, Kenyon Smith returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown as Kalamazoo Central held off rival Battle Creek Central 28-22.   Malcolm Fisher had 109 yards rushing and a touchdown for Battle Creek Central.
